How Is Networking Working for You?

Updated: May 15

Networking has become a popular avenue for marketing to many these days, whether a business or an individual. But in reality, does it help and, most importantly, does it make you money? I have found there are three types of people who go to a networking event like a card exchange, chamber meeting, business expo, so cial seminar, or other gathering to generate new biz.

The first is the Social Butterfly, who just wants to be around people and floats through the room looking for a smile, a nod, or some brief conversation to acknowledge their existence.

The second is the Free-Bee, who is into the giveaways, free food (even though you often pay at the door to get in), and are most satisfied with the night if the hors d'oeuvres are good and the buffet is plentiful - and let's not forget the bar...

The third type is the true Biz-Seeker, who is looking for contacts, is willing to start new relationships, and will share with others for mutual success. This is the person who walks away with the most from every event they attend and brings value with them wherever they go. These are the people who you want to connect with at your next network gath ering. They are few and far between, but they can be the most beneficial people to your endeavors (if you are willing to reciprocate).

You can spot the true Biz-Seekers because they are dressed right, carry themselves with confidence, will look you in the eye when you say hello, are listening to others, and usually will be moving around the room looking for the right connections. Watch for and connect with them and see how much more productive your networking event efforts become. True Biz-Seekers will also ask the right questions, such as "How can I help you and your business?" or "What does a good client for you look like?" They also are wise listeners, willing to hear what you have to say in order to build a relationship of mutual respect.

There are many opportunities to gather with professionals. Countywide, there are four chambers of commerce, including the Greater, Northern, Southern, and Eastern Monmouth Chambers and many more locally-focused business organizations such as the Colts Neck Business Association, the Hazlet Business Owners Association, and the Red Bank Business Association, to name a few. All of these and others throughout the area have a variety of events in diversified locations for people to meet and greet.

Relationship building is critical in business today and networking can certainly have a positive effect on your business and/or career. Next time you think about investing some of your valuable time, choose your event wisely, make the most of every contact opportunity, listen to others, and be ready to share your valuable information to the benefit of those new friends you meet. Oh, and don't forget your business cards!
