Motivation or Commitment?

Updated: May 15

There is much to be said for motivation, there is a whole industry based on it; books, articles, seminars, conferences and more are churned out day after day all to “motivate” people to do something.  But what is motivation without commitment?  It is said 74% of books purchased are never read through to the end.  Seminars and conferences often lift attendees to new emotional heights only for them to plummet to doldrums only days after they return home.  So, what really makes the difference between those who go up and down in their countenance and those who drive to new levels of success?  Commitment comes to mind.

A mentor of mine often said “talk is cheap” and it most certainly can be.  In order to succeed in a meaningful way it takes more than high spirited words.  It takes drive, consistency, dedication, which all come from commitment.  How committed are you to the goals you have for your life?  How driven are you to consistently move forward no matter what comes your way to achieve the next great thing on your journey?

People who are truly successful and content with their lives can always tell you how it was a day-by-day, step-by-step process that brought them to the place where they reach accomplishments.  What that looks like will vary from person to person, but if you are looking to move to higher ground (whatever that may be for you) and want to taste that “success” that you have dreamed of, get going.  You can do it but only with deep unwavering commitment.

Sorry to say that if you are a “start and stop” type of person or if you waver every day and need “motivation” all the time (all of us need it at some points but not every minute of every day) then achievements may not be for you.  Rethink where you are and look deep inside and do something no outside stimulus can do for you.  Make some commitments and stick to them.  This will bring you the joy along the road that will lead you to your place of “success”.

Waiting is not an option.  “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…” is not a strategy that will help you.  Get up with discipline and be productive every day (some days more than others) and build the bricks that will create a foundation for achievement and prosperity that waits ahead.  This is America and the “Dream” is still possible but not without hard work, discipline and most of all commitment.  If this is not for you that’s fine, we all need to set our own expectations and what brings us happiness will vary greatly.  But don’t be surprised if you lack commitment and one day end up in a place you never wanted to be.

“Productivity is never an accident.  It is always the result of commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and focused effort” - Paul J. Meyer.
